The American Institute of Architects, commonly abbreviated as AIA, is a professional membership organization of licensed architects, emerging design professionals, and allied partners. It is the leading membership organization in the US for architectural and design professionals. Its headquarters are based in Washington, DC.
Today, the AIA has 200 employees and approximately 300 local chapters. It mainly serves its members through advocacy programs, information, and community. It offers education community redevelopment, public outreach, and government advocacy services to its members.
Its primary mission is to support and improve the architectural profession as well as its public image. The AIA works with other professionals in the construction and design sector to help coordinate and advance the building industry.

History of the Organization
The origin of the American Institute of Architects dates back to 1857 when a group of 13 architects came together in New York City to promote not only the scientific but also the practical perfection of its professionals. It also wanted to elevate the profession’s standing in society.
The group’s initial name was the New York Society of Architects. Architects from other American cities were later asked to join, which started numerous chapters in areas like Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.
Today, the AIA has five membership levels which are Architect members, Associate members, International associate members, Emeritus members, and Allied members. Allied members represent professions closely related to the design and building community like planners or engineers. Students who wish to participate in the organization’s activities can join the national American Institute of Architecture Students or student membership categories in their respective chapters.
